How High Should a TV be Mounted?

You know, that’s a fantastic question with a lot of folks wondering the same thing! The generally accepted professional recommendation for TV mounting height is to position the center of the screen at the viewer’s eye level when they are seated comfortably.

Research suggests mounting a TV with its center at 40-42 inches from the floor for standard seating, like sofas, for optimal viewing comfort.

The evidence leans toward adjusting this height based on room type (e.g., bedrooms may need 50 inches) and seating height (e.g., barstools may require 57-60 inches).

Some reasons for center of the screen being eye level are
1. Optimal Viewing Comfort
2. Reduced Glare
3. Cinematic Experience

Helpful guide for TV sizes:

TV SizeCenter of TV Height (from floor)Bottom Edge Height (from floor)
43″40–42 inches~29–31 inches
55″40–42 inches~26–28 inches
65″40–42 inches~24–26 inches
75″40–42 inches~21–23 inches

A funny yet accurate way to get viewing height would be to have the TV viewer sit on the viewing location (couch) and measure from the person’s eye level to the ground, using that as the center of the TV.

You can also hold up the empty TV box on the wall to get a rough idea of the TV placement.

Some other considerations:
Seating Height: If you have particularly high or low seating, you’ll need to adjust accordingly. For example, if you have bar stools as your primary seating, you’ll naturally mount the TV higher.

TV Size: For very large TVs, some people prefer to mount them slightly higher than eye level to take in the entire screen comfortably.

Mounting Location: If you’re mounting a TV above a fireplace, it will inevitably be higher than ideal eye level. In such cases, using a tilting mount can help angle the screen downwards for better viewing.

Personal Preference: Ultimately, comfort is key. While the eye-level recommendation is a great starting point, some individuals may have personal preferences for a slightly higher or lower placement.
